Homemade Mexican Tortillas

Whether you are wanting to make your own tortillas for your favourite black bean and guacamole wrap, or attempting to try the latest trend of dessert tacos, this recipe is perfect for allowing you to be adventurous with your Mexican cooking.

Recipe for Homemade Mexican Tortillas

Ingredients

  • 500g of plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 25g of butter
  • 255ml of water

Preparation Method

  1. Start by whisking the flour, salt and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl. Work the butter into the flour using your fingers, this should resemble breadcrumbs. Mix the dough together with the water until the whole mixture has become combined.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, place the dough and knead the dough for a few minutes until it has become smooth.
  3. Once the dough has been correctly kneaded so that the mixture is now smooth, divide the dough into 24 equal pieces and roll into a ball.
  4. Using a well-floured rolling pin, roll the dough ball into a thin, circular tortilla shaped wrap. Once the tortilla has been thoroughly rolled, on a preheated pan over a medium heat, place the tortilla into the pan. When the tortilla begins to bubble and turn golden, flip the tortilla and continue cooking until the other side begins to bubble and turn golden too. Remove the tortilla and follow the same method for the other 23 pieces.
  5. For those wanting to turn their humble tortillas into a crunchy taco shell, start by laying the freshly made tortillas onto a clean surface and cover on both sides with oil or a light cooking spray.
  6. Using a preheated oven, drape the tortillas over two bars on the oven rack at 190°C for around 8 minutes.
